My son Taylor was born very healthy with no complications during delivery. Within 24 hours of birth he was given a Hep B vaccine. He developed jaundice and an elevated bilirubin level within hours of getting the vaccine. We were told by the Pediatrician that this was not uncommon with newborns and the issues should resolve within a few days and they did.
Taylor was neurotypical and full of personality. He was vaccinated on schedule at each well baby visit. He developed an ear infection the week before his first birthday and was treated with 2 rounds of antibiotics and steroids.
Two weeks later I took him for his 12 month well baby check up. His Pediatrician told me it was time for more vaccines. I voiced my concerns about delaying these vaccines because of his recent infection with fever and the fact that he had just taken antibiotics and steroids. He told me that as long as he had not had an elevated temp within the past 72 hours it was perfectly okay to give the vaccines and that I shouldn't let him get behind schedule. He then went on to tell me about all the horrible diseases he could get if we didn't vaccinate him on time. He received the MMR and Prevnar at this visit.
He was very irritable and fussy over the next few days and he developed a full body rash and 104 temp. The rash was a textbook picture of Measles yet the pediatrician downplayed it and told me that he could have just had a generalized reaction to something like soap or detergent but he also told me that adverse reactions to vaccines can occur for up to 10 days after the vaccine is given. He also wrote on his chart ( that I later obtained) that the MMR was questionable regarding his symptoms. He told me to give him Tylenol for the fever and Benadryl for the rash which we did.
Over the next few days he stopped making eye contact, stopped responding to his name, stopped babbling and started to make high pitched squealing sounds. He started regressing and within a few months he was considered significantly developmentally delayed! He started to have blank staring episodes which were actually Petit Mal seizures and he didn't walk until he was 2 years old.
After taking him to over a dozen Specialists and having all genetic testing come back normal, he was diagnosed with Autism.
I am a Registered Nurse and knew nothing about vaccines other than what I had been taught in the medical field. It was ingrained into me that you vaccinate to prevent horrible diseases like Polio from returning. I will forever regret not educating myself on vaccines and blindly trusting my doctor!
Not a day goes by that I don't wish that I could go back and do it all over again knowing what I know now! Our son was severely damaged from vaccines and will never lead a normal life.
